I just don't get it - why don't people want housing to be affordable in the inner suburbs?
Who's saying they don't want affordable inner suburb housing?! I haven't heard anyone express that thought here at all.
I personally would LOVE to skip the 1 hour each way commute by living closer to town. But the reality is we have urban layouts that were largely designed a century or more ago. The solution isn't to slash negative gearing & deflate the whole housing market. The solution is to integrate what we know about liveability into all aspects of development & design, so that all of our suburban areas enjoy a greater number of amenities, regardless of where they are.
And teleworking. If they could just built that bloody NBN already, more of us could integrate aspects of teleworking into our lives. That would even out the playing field a lot.

But if housing in the inner suburbs was cheaper, wouldn't that have a flow on effect to the outer suburbs- causing the outer suburbs to experience price drops?
